Apple to Introduce New ‘Passwords’ App for iPhones and Macs
Apple is set to unveil a new standalone password manager app named 'Passwords' during the upcoming Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15.
This new app will be powered by Apple's iCloud Keychain, the existing password management system for macOS and iOS. While Keychain currently offers a comprehensive tool for generating and storing passwords, it is somewhat hidden within the settings, making it less user-friendly.
The new Passwords app aims to encourage users to adopt strong, unique passwords to protect against data breaches. By offering a standalone app, Apple hopes to attract users away from other password managers like Bitwarden, LastPass, and 1Password. The app will also allow users to import credentials from these competing apps, simplifying the transition.
Passwords will feature categories for organizing passwords, such as WiFi networks, passkeys, and website accounts. Additionally, it will serve as a multi-factor authentication app, joining Google Authenticator, Authy, Duo, and dozens of others.
